I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and for my entire 25 year career thus far I've always worked for a company. However, I was recently released from my last company as part of a restructure. I'm considering doing some contract consulting work at the controller level until I find a good permanent opportunity. How do I determine an appropriate rate to charge?

Henry, generally if you work for a firm like Resources Global, a Controller opportunity should pay in the 50s to low 60's. If you do it on your own, probably aroung 90 or 100/hour seems reasonable.

Thanks Dave. You answered exactly what I needed to know. I've often been on the receiving end of getting bills from firms like Global Resources, but I never knew what the individuals actually received. Now I see that the margin is pretty large for the firms. thanks again.
