I am in a grad school program looking to merge this growing area with my financial management background. Would appreciate connecting with anyone who has been down this path. As many analytics initiatives start in finance areas, see synergies as companies get more involved with these issues.

Thank you!

Dave,

I've used Tableau Software in several instances starting from a Finance dept point of view (FP&A), for a variety of purposes, some of which include:
1) Streamline monthly variance analysis (we included a "data dump" of SAP Journal Entries to go all the way to transactions in specific G&A accounts)
2) P&L performance (ie. Gross Margin analysis, Labor, Sales drivers, Inventory, etc.)
3) Promotion performance (together with Marketing, analyzing product level performance across portfolio of stores)

Hope this gives you a few ideas.

Regards,

David

I left a data analytics software firm a few months ago. I can give you some guidance as to some of the pitfalls and things to look out for.

I recently left a large consumer products company and was responsible for reporting using Tableau and generating top notch PowerPoint presentations. My staff used Tableau and prepared the PowerPoint decks but I managed the process. I would be happy to discuss the topic with you further.

I work as an equity quantitative strategist for the past nine years. Before this I was doing research in computer vision and have used many machine learning techniques. So I'm very interested in the new trend in financial data analytics. Please let me know if there's anything I can help with.

I was recently involved in selection of a BI solution for a large business in Security Services with a large set of business lines, including transportation & logistics and the short list was: Tableau, Qlikview and Microsoft Power BI.

An interesting observation during the process was that the IT guys tend to confiscate it, want to capture within the software the financial knowledge from Finance specialists, with the intention to restrict then the administrative rights of Finance professionals to the core settings within it (mapping/formulas) and then use it to consolidate their specialist redoubt/citadel/power ... and then reclaim in board meetings more restructuring in Finance dept personnel.

Why not sharing right here in the forum any relevant knowledge in Data Analytics/BI, from Finance Pros point of view !? I think it would be interesting.

Would you like to share here, in a few words, what have you essentially learnt on the courses you have attending ?

Thank you
