I'm currently working with an Executive Director who would like to attend some training to gain better familiarity with finance and accounting concepts and responsibilities. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I'm not sure if there is anything specific for non-financial executives, but he/she might want to look at cpaacademy.org - it's tough to beat the cost of their seminars - 90%+ are free.

The other option they might want to look at is https://www.score.org/

This may not be helpful as I'm in Boston, but I've taught an internal class on that subject ( 4 hours) as well as

a grad level course for 14 weeks.  Perhaps something could be tailored to his needs.

I recommend that you view local colleges and universities business school website and check for executive classes for non-financial upper managers.  I am an Adjunct Faculty member at Drexel university's LeBow College of Business in Philadelphia and we offer such classes often.  Most business school do the same.   When i was a President & CFO, I recommended many of my non-financial direct reports to enroll in the course and it paid dividends.

Here's a good book that I can personally recommend, and it's title seems exactly right: Finance for Executives: Managing for Value Creation, 3rd ed., by Hawawini and Viallet (South-Western Cengage Learning: 2007).  Another idea would be to hire a mentor or retired exec to guide your exec for a while.  And lastly, if none of the above, he might consider joining a peer group (a master mind) of other executives, where hopefully there is financial and accounting experience and strength in the group.

I do regular training with Global Financial Markets Institute (gfmi.com), Financial Markets World (fmwonline.org) and Moodys Analytics in the areas of credit, capital markets and derivatives and recommend checking out those websites.  Also in more traditional corporate finance would be New York Institute of Finance and New York Society of Security Analysts, both of which I have worked with in the past. Would be happy to chat and help further and can be reached on LinkedIn.  Charles R. Gates

The National Investor Relations Institute (www.niri.org) runs a Finance 101 for Corporate Communications program.  Generally this program is offered quarterly in NYC.  There's also the Wall Street Training (http://www.wallst-training.com) which offers online training programs from basic to sophisticated financial modeling.

Steve, go to Coursera.  Wharton has offerings in both accounting and finance.  If you just take the course and do not request a certificate, believe you can get it for free.  All taught by Wharton professors.

Yes,

Years ago NYU sponsored a course( with a fee) for finance and accounting for non financial executives. I took the course and it did prove worthwhile, plus you do not know who you will also meet as a beneficial contact.
