As you can tell by the length of tonight’s newsletter, the published job market isn’t as strong as we would like it to be. That said, with 37,000+ members, I would hope we could generate more job leads for our newsletter. A few suggestions follow below.

If I may paraphrase Yogi Berra, our politicians have messed up right field so bad I don’t think anyone can play it. You may substitute the senior financial job market for right field.

To mix a few metaphors tonight, as good as the economy may appear to be, the job market for senior financial executives seems to be a little thin. That said, we have no choice but to play the cards we have been dealt. For those of you who are sailors, the operative slogan is that you have to sail the wind you have, not the wind you wished you had, and not the wind you deserve.

So, what do we have going for us? First and foremost, we have The FENG.

I hope all of you know that The FENG has a great reputation. Lots and lots of folks are aware of us and they generally have a good opinion.

While we still have about 4,000+ Friends of The FENG (down from 11,000+), we need more. All of you know people in the business. Have you called ALL of them to see how they’re doing? Even if they moan and groan about the state of the world, have them visit our website and register. http://thefeng.org/membership/application.php?AppType=F Our goal is to always be top of mind when jobs come up.

How many of you know Human Resources types? Have you called ALL of them to see how they’re doing? Yes, I know they may not be filling any jobs at the moment, but could you also tell THEM about The FENG and have them visit our website and register? http://thefeng.org/membership/application.php?AppType=E

Just because they don’t have a job for you, they may have a job for one of your friends in The FENG, if not now, in the near future. Under Matt’s law of large numbers, the overlap from others will yield appropriate opportunities for you.

A good sailor knows how to harness the wind. When there are job leads, we have a great power tool to help recruiters at search firms and at corporations find valued employees. (Here I’m thinking only of members of The FENG as fitting that description.)

But if we wait until there is demand to reach out to these folks, we will miss out. They may through their own stupidity (Did I say that?) hire folks who are strangers, i.e. non-members if they don’t know about our great resource.

Although it may be true that the “darkest hour is before dawn,” I have often sailed through the night, and it isn’t as dark in the middle of the night as most people think.

Our very own “thousand points of light” are all of you. So reach out and touch a few folks on our behalf. They will be delighted to hear from you and learn about our great resource.
