It’s very easy in these difficult and unusual times to feel that there is nothing you can do. With the constant barrage of the 24/7 news cycle, it is also very easy to believe that what is going on is never going to end.
Well, it may never end. Be that as it may, while we are waiting for it to end there is something very FENG that I want all of you to do beginning tomorrow, and every day until sanity reigns again. Please commit to spending at least an hour a day on this assigned project.
Your day tomorrow will begin with my publishing our weekly list of new members. There are only 27 new members this week, but I am prepared for large numbers of you to contact all of them and totally impress them with what a friendly and helpful bunch of folks we are. You can also reach back to previous recent lists of new members that you have put aside and go through those as well. If you didn’t save these messages, visit our website and download a few of them. You will find them under “Member Area, Member Downloads, New Member Directories.”
After you have practiced on a few strangers and you are feeling pretty good about yourself, I want you to put your thinking cap on and try to remember all the friends you have made over the years who you haven’t heard from in a while. You may do this randomly, or if you are a compulsive like I am, put them on an alphabetical list and start making calls. If you are of a mind to do so, you also have my permission to call any and all of your relatives who you are on speaking terms with and see how their doing. Everyone you call will be delighted to hear from you, I can guarantee it.
With most of the world quarantined, the odds of you reaching people is going to be very high.
Everyone is feeling very isolated right now. If you do your part what you will find is that YOU won’t feel isolated. Since you will have to force yourself in the beginning to paint on a smile for all the folks you are going to call, you will find the warmth of all the friendships you will be reinforcing will lift your spirits and put you in a better frame of mind to face whatever it is we are going to have to face over the next several weeks.
One of my many “sayings from the Chairman” is: The more you help other people, the more you help yourself. This will indeed be one of those times.
Hang in there and keep at it. After all, it’s not like you have a choice but to carry on.
