Cryptocurrencies: Trends and their role in the financial system
Speaker: Ally Hoffman, Sr Risk Specialist, Dallas Federal Reserve Bank
Cryptocurrency is everywhere. Whether you are an avid crypto investor or a spectator of the recent crypto headlines, nearly all of us have interacted with cryptocurrencies over the past year. This session will provide an overview of what cryptocurrencies are, how they work, and an explanation of the blockchain technology that supports them. We will briefly discuss how blockchain is being used to support other technical advancements such as smart contracts and non-fungible tokens (NFTs). We will also address trends in cryptocurrency markets, including takeaways from the recent crash. The intent is that you leave the session with a greater understanding of cryptocurrencies, their purpose in the financial system, and ways in which blockchain technology can be used to support similar financial advancements in the future.
Ally Hoffman is a Senior IT and Cybersecurity Risk Specialist in Banking Supervision at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. She serves in a supervisory capacity as an IT and cybersecurity functional Examiner-in-Charge for large banking organizations. Hoffman also performs financial market research where she specializes on the modernization and adoption of cryptocurrencies. Outside of her work at FRB Dallas, Hoffman is a on the faculty at Northeastern University where she teaches a course on cybersecurity governance, risk, and compliance to graduate computer science students.
Hoffman holds a B.S. in Business Administration from Boston University, a M.S. in Information Assurance and Cybersecurity from Northeastern University, and is pursuing a Ph.D. in Business Administration and Data Science at Oklahoma State University.
