Agenda:

Topic:  "Sanctions and Supply Chains"

Speaker: David Edick, Jr, Principal of Core Global Advisory

CPE credit: 1.0 hour

Presentation:
On February 24, 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine. Russian planes attacked; Russian troops who had been massing at the border moved into Ukraine, fanning out and heading west toward the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv. It was the first overt act of naked aggression by one sovereign European country against another since the end of World War II.

The Kremlin’s expectation was that the Ukrainian military and political leadership would fold quickly. However, within days the invasion largely ground to a halt. For reasons widely documented in the press, the Ukrainians largely stopped the Russians in their tracks -- and in their half-tracks, tanks and trucks. Moral outrage against the Russian attack echoed around the world, but it was the response of the Ukrainians themselves which inspired the rest of the world to begin to act in support of Ukraine.

Nevertheless, the war to date has sent over 4 million refugees to Europe and over 6 million elsewhere within Ukraine.

Meanwhile, while U.S. President Biden had stated that no American troops would be sent in to Ukraine, the U.S. and many of its allied countries began taking an array of other actions. A vast counterstrike of financial and economic sanctions was placed on Russia – including an impressive wave of uncoordinated industry self-sanctions, itself a new phenomenon. Despite the fog of war and a rapidly-evolving situation on all sides, one may reasonably ask: what are the economic and financial consequences of this war for the US, for Europe, for Russia, and for the world?

David Edick Jr. will address this complex question, drawing on his 30+ years expertise in energy, commodities, logistics and geopolitics.

This talk and discussion will enable us all to make sense out of what is happening in connection with the war, both directly and through the many layers of ripple effects. We should all end the meeting with a much better understanding of the following questions and facts:
• What exactly are "economic sanctions", and do they really have any deep-seated effects?
• A global energy shock in on the way
• Diesel is the global energy weak link, and its effects will be felt
• Europe’s de-russification of energy supplies will alter energy flows and prices worldwide – and drive a natural gas boom in the US
• A global food crisis is coming
• Deeply strained by the pandemic, logistics will be stretched even farther (and Covid isn’t done yet)
• Rising prices will drive tighter money
• In this supply shock, demand destruction caused by high prices will translate into recession
• Domestic politics and geopolitics have come to center stage for business
• Resilience and reliability have replaced efficiency as the driver of supply chain management

We have all read elsewhere about the military, diplomatic and global political aspects of the war. This talk will give us some powerful analysis and deeper understanding of the economic and financial effects of the war. A talk not to be missed.

Similar to David's presentation to us two years ago on Fracking and US Energy Independence, and his presentation last year on The Natural Gas Pricing Crunch and Inflation, this will be a talk with active Q&A and lots of facts, analytical insights and new understanding of some complex issues. Join us tomorrow, when David will address the above issues and more in this highly engaging and energetic presentation.

David Edick, Jr., global political economist and Principal of Core Global Advisory, a consultancy focused on commodities, political risk, geopolitics and market strategy. David will speak to us on "Sanctions and Supply Chains", a very timely topic, given how the West is responding to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Those who have seen David's past presentations will not be disappointed; those who have not yet had the pleasure are in for a treat. Lots of analytical insight, lots of Q&A.
