Is the glass half full?

Being Out of Work

We are probably all aware and have been known to ponder the enigma of: “Which came first, the chicken or the egg?”

As good accountants, we have also probably pondered whether the glass was half full or half empty. If only “they” had a good accounting procedure, I am sure we would know. We would also know which portion had been charged to expense and which was still “hung up” on the balance sheet. (I always visualize a meat locker labeled “Balance Sheet” with sides of beef hanging inside when I hear the phrase “hung up on the balance sheet”.)

Actually, tonight’s editorial is about the need for all of us to recognize, in ourselves and in those around us, when the glass is full to the top. (This is the point when the water starts spilling over the sides.)

If you have been at your job search for any length of time, and that could be a week, a month or a year, it is little wonder that you are feeling stressed. I hate to say it, but it is normal.

As your job search drags on, the savings account gets depleted and bills loom in the distance, it is easy to get overwhelmed.

When you are out and about in “the world,” talking to other members, be sensitive to their concerns and be listening for those who “really” need your help. (You might want to return calls promptly.) And, try to recognize when you are reaching this dangerous level yourself.

Are you kicking the dog? (Always dangerous if the dog is very large!) Are you breaking number 2 pencils? (Very expensive!) Are you screaming at other drivers when you are in traffic? (Be careful, you never know which ones can hear you. I speak from experience!)

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is time to regain your focus.

The truth is that you will get through it. As one of my friends once said: “No one is out of work forever, it just seems that way.”

The other truth is that you may be surprised how little it takes to pull you or someone you know or talk to back from the edge. If you just sip a very little amount of water out of a glass, it is no longer spilling over the sides.

Always assume that each person with whom you speak may need just a little boost to keep them from spilling over the sides. Help get them pumped up and back at it.

The worst that can happen is we will all make the world a better and more caring place. Now that wouldn’t be so bad, would it?
